The Australian Department of Biodiversity approached Gaia and Liquid to conceptualise the future of the Australian National Species List. The list is a resource for scientists, students and the general public to access academic references, historical census data and key information about all plant and animal species in Australia. 

The challenge was to create a simple interface connected to the database that accommodates for many user needs.

The solution is a search interface with key entry points for each kingdom. The design aims to convey the Department of Biodiversity’s academic authority while using colour and natural forms referenced from historic academic journals and nature to support wayfinding.
