WA Dept of Biodiversity Dandjoo

Role ⸻ Lead Product Designer | Time ⸻ 2021 | Status ⸻ Launched

The Western Australian Department of Biodiversity holds an enormous database consisting of thousands of private and government studies on flora and fauna within the state. Unfortunately, the information was not easily accessible to the public in a consistent format. This created unnecessary hurdles for companies, students, and even the government themselves when relying on the data for reporting and environmental protection.

To address this issue, a project was undertaken within the department to store the data in a consistently formatted database with an open API endpoint to provide people access to the data.

As part of the project, Liquid was commissioned to develop a graphical user interface for the API, to cater for the cohort of users who were not technical enough to access the API. Through research, discovery, and user testing, we identified two primary search views: a map view allowing users to search plant and animal information by location, and a table view for tabular data presentation.

My role was as the lead product designer on the project, where we built a responsive web app. This app enables users to search, filter, view, and download data from the database.

Currently in beta, the app represents the minimum viable product and demonstrates the possibilities of utilising the data from the API. Ongoing improvements are being made to enhance search functionality and performance.
